Easter Awards

These two marquetry panels and the corresponding drawings were a collaboration between Michael McCallister and his six-year-old daughter. The idea was to make an award for an Easter egg gathering contest.

The challenge was to maintain the looseness of a child's drawing through the studied translation of the drawing into a marquetry format. This is a consideration when any artist's drawing is converted to a different medium.

The subtleties of design are affected by the choices made in regard to the veneers used and how they are used. Decisions that have to be made include what wood species to use, the direction of the grain, what cut of the wood is preferred (bird's eye, curly, straight or open grain, etc.), or colors if dyed veneers are used.
